When is it safe for an athlete to return to their sport?
After an injury, the first thing an athlete wants to know is when they can return to their sport. The answer to that question depends on the athlete, their unique situation, and a professional medical evaluation. Returning to play too soon can re-injure the athlete, but waiting too long can decondition their mind and body.
In order to be ready for play, the body needs to be reconditioned—achievable through rehabilitation and physical therapy. During that process, the athlete will work on rebuilding their mobility and strength through assisted physical activities that gradually intensify as time goes on.
We specialize in various techniques and areas like orthopedics and sports injuries to help athletes return to their sport.
Our 8-Step Return to Play Progression
While every recovery is different this is a typical outline that our PTs will follow during your full road to recovery.
-
The athlete is back to regular activities like school. If given the green light by a medical professional to begin the return to play process, the athlete can incorporate short walks into their routine and other non-strenuous activities.
-
The athlete can start incorporating light aerobic exercises that increase their heart rate slightly like riding a bike and jogging.
-
You’ll sit down with your physical therapist and assess where you are currently and where you would like to get back to. This is technically our first step along the return to play progression.
-
With this step, physical activity should continue to raise the athlete’s heart rate slightly and include body or head movements. Moderate running and weightlifting are acceptable.
-
At this stage, the athlete can start incorporating their regular running and weightlifting routines back in with non-contact sport-specific drills.
-
The athlete can return to practice and engage in full contact drills.
-
Your physical therapist will administer a test to see how far you’ve come to your goals and determine if you’re ready for a full return.
-
The athlete can return to playing their sport competitively.
