It’s October so you know what that means… National Physical Therapy Month! This not only allows us to commemorate what physical therapy is all about, but we also have the pleasure of recognizing and celebrating our physical therapists who have made such a difference in the lives of their patients.

We also want to use this as an opportunity to give you a general awareness of the value of physical therapy and the benefits of how physical therapy can improve your physical well-being.

Our team of Certified Professionals has put their heart into Advanced Rehab and Sports Center in San Antonio and truly believes that National Physical Therapy Month is something worth celebrating!

Who Are Physical Therapists & What Do They Do?

Physical therapists are trained professionals who specialize in rehabilitation such as hands-on therapy sessions, strengthening exercises, and stretching as well as a dry needling treatment

Physical therapists usually help patients who have recently suffered an injury or been through a recent surgical procedure to help them get back to normal physical health but are also happy to see a patient who is just looking to better themselves and prevent future injuries from happening.

With each patient comes a different approach as our Physical Therapists here at Advanced Rehab and Sports Center, customize a rehabilitation program to fit their specific needs.

The Benefits of Going to Physical Therapy

Physical therapy comes with many benefits, especially for those who have undergone some sort of sports-related or other physical injuries that can affect your quality of life and keep you from doing everyday activities.

A primary care doctor may suggest that you see a physical therapist for treatment before anything else as it’s a non-invasive and conventional way to help with injuries.

To celebrate National Physical Therapy Month, let’s go through the numerous benefits of physical therapy and how it can help you:

Injury Prevention

Whether you are a young athlete or someone who likes to run for general health, injury can occur in almost any situation which is why Physical Therapy is so important.

Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants both have advanced knowledge of the body, and therefore, can target certain areas by creating an individualized treatment program to work on strength and conditioning.

In doing so, patients will see a massive improvement in the affected area, and the exercises will serve as a safety net to help minimize the risk of any further injury.

Avoid Getting Surgery

The last thing anyone wants to do is get surgery, especially if it isn’t needed. That being said, a great alternative to surgery is going to physical therapy.

Our Physical Therapists at ARSC curate a customized treatment just for you, that way, we can start addressing the root of the problem and doing the necessary movements to treat that problem.

The main goal for us is to alleviate the pain that you are feeling and do our best to set you up for success once the treatment plan is over by sending you home with a list of effective exercises and stretches for you to do at home on your own time!

Better Your Mental Health

It’s no secret that movement and exercise release endorphins that can result in anxiety relief, stress relief, and more. The same goes for physical therapy! Physical therapy allows you to partake in focused exercises and stretches that get your body moving.

Physical exercise will release those “feel good” chemicals that our body craves and relieve any mental distress that we might feel otherwise.

Manage Diabetes and Other Chronic Related Diseases

Diabetes is a common health condition that causes issues in the body and prevents someone from processing glucose correctly, which can result in high blood sugar. Physical activity has been proven to help reduce and regulate your blood sugar levels.

Many times, Diabetics also have issues feeling any kind of bodily sensations in their feet or legs, and this can be treated with physical therapy.

Physical therapists can provide these patients with the necessary knowledge and exercises or stretching that can prevent further harm down the line.

Helps You Maintain A Healthy & Active Lifestyle

Overall, physical activity such as exercise and stretching can improve your strength, reduce the risk of disease, increase your ability to engage in everyday activities, and so much more.

Our Physical Therapy experts are ready to go on this journey with you and draw up a plan for you to perform exercises in a controlled environment.

When Was National Physical Therapy Month Created?

Starting as just a National Physical Therapy Week in the 1980s, the APTA decided it was time to celebrate the Physical Therapy community on a larger scale. In October 1992, National Physical Therapy Month was created!

The American Physical Therapy Association has made it their mission to help celebrate and honor the Physical Therapists and Assistants who have dedicated their livelihood to helping people heal from physical injuries, get moving, and live a healthy lifestyle.

So, we just want to say Happy National Physical Therapy Month to all of the PT clinics that have made a difference in their patient's lives!
